About this service

Performance modification covers a wide range of work, from a straightforward ECU remap through to a fully built engine, and the right starting point for any of it is an honest assessment of the vehicle's current mechanical condition, not the modification itself. A car with worn engine mounts, ageing timing components, or a marginal cooling system is a poor candidate for extra power until those underlying issues are addressed, because performance work places more demand on every system connected to the engine, not less.

ECU remapping is carried out entirely in-house at 360 Garage. Remapping adjusts the software controlling fuel delivery, ignition timing, boost pressure and other parameters within the engine control unit, and a well-executed remap on a suitable vehicle can improve power delivery and responsiveness. We assess each vehicle's suitability individually, considering its mechanical condition, mileage, service history and the specific engine and turbocharger or supercharger combination, before recommending a remap. It is important to be transparent that we do not have an on-site rolling road dyno; where dyno testing or verification is wanted, this can be arranged through suitable external facilities, and we do not promise specific power or torque figures, since real-world results vary by vehicle, condition and the specific tune applied.

Any performance modification, remapping included, has legal and insurance implications that we discuss openly with every customer. Modifying a vehicle's performance characteristics is something an insurer needs to be told about, and failing to declare a genuine modification can affect the validity of a policy in the event of a claim. Similarly, modifications must keep the vehicle road legal, meeting emissions, noise and construction and use requirements, and we will not carry out or recommend work that would make a vehicle illegal to use on the road.

Intake and exhaust modifications work by reducing restriction in the air entering and leaving the engine, which can support power gains, particularly when paired with a remap, but the benefit depends heavily on what else is fitted and how the engine management is set up to use the extra airflow. Turbocharger and supercharger work ranges from upgrading an existing unit to fitting a larger unit entirely, and always needs to be considered alongside supporting components such as fuelling, cooling and, in higher-power builds, the strength of internal engine components.

    We explain the requirement to declare modifications to an insurer and confirm that any proposed work will keep the vehicle road legal.

    Planning supporting modifications

    For any significant power increase, we plan the supporting changes, such as cooling, fuelling or internal components, that the build genuinely needs to work reliably.

  4. 04

    Performance work carried out

    The agreed work, whether remapping, intake and exhaust changes, turbo or supercharger fitting, suspension, brakes, or an LSD, is carried out in-house.

    Geometry and setup

    Where suspension changes have been made, geometry is set to suit the new ride height and intended handling characteristics.

  6. 06

    Verification and handover

    The vehicle is checked and road tested following the work, with any recommended dyno verification discussed as an option through suitable external facilities.

Capability

Why suitability comes before power

An ECU remap changes how the engine control unit manages fuel delivery, ignition timing and, on turbocharged or supercharged engines, boost pressure. On a mechanically sound vehicle, this can improve power delivery and responsiveness, but on a vehicle with worn engine mounts, marginal cooling, or ageing internal components, the same remap places extra strain on parts already close to the end of their service life.

We do not have an on-site rolling road dyno at 360 Garage. Remapping is carried out in-house using diagnostic and tuning equipment appropriate to the vehicle, and where a customer wants dyno-verified power figures, this can be arranged through suitable external facilities. We do not promise specific power or torque figures for any remap or modification, because genuine results depend on the individual vehicle's condition and the specific combination of modifications fitted.

Higher levels of tune place increasing demand on cylinder pressure, and standard internal components such as pistons and connecting rods are designed with a safety margin around standard output, not unlimited headroom. For builds targeting significantly increased output, forged internal components are often necessary to handle the increased loads reliably, and we advise on this based on the realistic target output for the build.

Coilover suspension allows adjustment of ride height and, on many designs, damping stiffness, letting a car be set up for its intended use, whether that is a lower, stiffer setup for track use or a more road-friendly compromise. Changing ride height changes the suspension geometry from its designed values, which is why geometry should always be reset following a coilover installation rather than left at standard settings.

Modifying a vehicle's performance characteristics is a material change from the perspective of an insurer, and needs to be declared. Similarly, modifications must not compromise the vehicle's road legality in terms of emissions, noise or construction and use regulations, and we will not carry out work that would put a vehicle outside these requirements.
