Bumpers take more knocks than any other panel on the car, mostly from low-speed contact — kerbs, parking bollards, other vehicles in tight car parks. The damage varies a lot in severity, from a surface scuff that has only marked the paint, through to a crack in the plastic. It can also mean a split at a mounting point, or distortion where the bumper has been pushed out of shape by an impact. Each type of damage calls for a different repair approach, so the first job is establishing exactly what we're dealing with.
Scuffs and light scratches that haven't gone through to the plastic beneath the paint are often addressed with careful preparation, filling where needed, and refinishing rather than any structural repair to the bumper itself. Cracks and splits are a different matter — these usually need the plastic itself repaired, using plastic welding or specialist repair techniques suited to the specific bumper material, before the surface can be refinished. Distortion, where the bumper has been pushed out of its original shape, sometimes responds to careful reshaping, but where the plastic has been overstressed, replacement may be the safer route.
Modern bumpers are rarely just a plastic shell. Many carry parking sensors, and increasingly they house radar units that support ADAS features like adaptive cruise control or automatic emergency braking. Where a bumper has to come off for repair or is being replaced, these components need to be removed and refitted. In the case of radar-linked systems, they also need to be checked and recalibrated correctly so they continue to function as intended.
Deciding between repairing the existing bumper and fitting a replacement comes down to a few things: how extensive the crack or split is. It also depends on whether the plastic has been stretched or thinned beyond a safe repair, and whether sensor or radar mountings have been damaged. Finally, it depends on how the repaired bumper is likely to hold up over time compared with a new one. We explain this assessment plainly rather than defaulting to whichever option is more profitable for us.
When customers come to us
- Parking scuffs and scratches
- Light surface marks from kerbs, bollards or tight parking spaces are common and are usually resolved with preparation and localised refinishing.
- Cracked bumper corners
- A knock to the corner of a bumper can crack the plastic without a full split, which is repairable in many cases using plastic repair techniques suited to the material.
- Splits and torn mounting points
- Harder impacts can split the bumper or tear it at a mounting clip. Whether this is repairable depends on how much of the structure is compromised.
- Distorted or misshapen bumpers
- An impact can push a bumper out of its original shape without breaking it. We assess whether careful reshaping is viable or whether the panel needs replacing.
- Parking sensor faults after damage
- A knock that dislodges or damages a parking sensor can cause it to malfunction or stop working; sensors are checked and refitted correctly as part of the repair.
- Radar or ADAS warnings after bumper contact
- Where a bumper houses a radar unit for adaptive cruise control or similar systems, damage or removal for repair means the system needs checking and, where relevant, recalibrating.
