Explained

What is Part P and why does it matter?

The building regulation that governs domestic electrical work in England and Wales.

Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical safety in dwellings. It requires certain notifiable electrical work — like consumer unit replacements, kitchen or bathroom electrics, or garden supplies — to be either signed off by Building Control or completed by a Competent Person Scheme member who self-certifies.

Why it matters for you

Non-notified work can be flagged on future property sales, is often not covered by insurance, and can force you to pay for retrospective inspection. Always use a registered installer for notifiable work.
